I don't have a favorite team in this week's Super Bowl, but you can bet I'll be watching the day's events with interest.
If you haven't heard, CBS made waves last week, after it was announced that they'd be running an anti-choice ad from the far-right group Focus on the Family during the Super Bowl.
There's been plenty of discussion about how CBS made their decision and why they decided to change their policy at this time. But I can't help but think about an even more troublesome, underlying issue: that anti-choice forces are ratcheting up their attacks on women's rights and preparing for a forceful -- and public -- assault leading up to this fall's midterm elections.
If the passage of the House-s Stupak/Pitts Amendment taught us anything, it's that we need more pro-choice Democratic women in Congress to fight for reproductive rights. Every EMILY's List woman you helped elect voted against the measure, but when it came down to a vote, we needed more women there to stand with them.
When I learned of Stupak's proposed amendment, I rallied my supporters immediately to take action and fight against new restrictions on a woman's right to choose. Because, after years working on behalf of women's rights in New Hampshire, there's one thing I know for sure: If given the opportunity to roll back women's rights, anti-choice proponents will do just that. And given the tough battles Democrats face this fall, we can't afford to let up for a moment.

NH-02 candidate Ann McLane Kuster is certainly on a roll.
The Concord Monitor highlighted Kuster's campaign momentum recently, pointing out that she's hard at work fundraising and building a strong supporter base.
Kuster has also been making the rounds in the district lately, reaching out to voters and getting out her message. She'll certainly need to build momentum now, as the GOP is sure to make this Granite State seat a top target in November.

We were excited to have congressional candidate Ann McLane Kuster (NH-02) in the office this week. Ann's campaign is in full swing, and we're always happy when candidates drop by the office to check in with staff.
In case you missed our earlier post about Ann's leadership on women's reproductive rights, particularly relevant during the current threat of the Stupak/Pitts Amendment, be sure to read it here. And you can learn more about Ann's race in the Granite state by checking out her candidate profile.
Here are some pictures from Ann's time in the office.

The Stupak/Pitts Amendment, passed with the House's health care bill last week, has caused a firestorm among pro-choice organizations and leaders. In New Hampshire, EMILY's List candidate Ann McLane Kuster, a long-time advocate for women's reproductive rights, has been at the forefront of the call for continued protection of women's rights.
McLane Kuster sent an email to supporters before the amendment passed, warning them of the dangerous potential outcome and the need for action:
"I believe a woman and her medical care provider should be making decisions about her health care, not the politicians in Washington.
We can't let the anti-choice movement use abortion to derail health care reform and we can't let them use health care reform to restrict a woman's right to choose."
We couldn't have said it better ourselves. All of the EMILY's List women in the House voted against the Stupak/Pitts Amendment, and we can't wait to add Ann's voice to theirs to help defend women's rights.

Big news from the Granite State!
EMILY's List announced our endorsement of Ann McLane Kuster in New Hampshire's second district today. Annie is campaigning to fill the seat of Democratic Cong. Paul Hodes, who's running for the Senate next year. It will be crucial that Democrats hold on to this seat next year -- and we have just the candidate for the job!
Annie will likely have a competitive race ahead of her. Republican Jennifer Horn, who took on Hodes unsuccessfully in 2008, has already announced she's in the race. And former Republican Cong. Charlie Bass, who held this seat until 2006, is said to be eying the seat.
But we know Annie has the background, experience, and commitment to come out on top, and we couldn't be more excited about endorsing her.
Here are some words from EMILY's List President Ellen Malcolm's from today's endorsement:
"Annie is a long time community activist, attorney, author and public policy advocate with deep roots in New Hampshire. She has what it takes to make life better for Granite State families and will work to make health care affordable for every American, protect a woman’s right to choose, and look for new opportunities for renewable energy."
"Annie is running a great campaign and already has the support of hundreds of grassroots activists in New Hampshire. She is clearly the strongest candidate to keep this seat in the Democratic column."
Go, Annie!

We're almost at the one-year mark for 2010 elections, and you can feel races starting to heat up. Around here, that means keeping a close eye on some of the most highly anticipated races in the country. A number of impressive women candidates have the press and the pundits talking, and we want to make sure you know about the latest House buzz:
Ann McLane Kuster, NH-02
The Nashua Telegraph recently reported that "Democratic congressional candidate Ann McLane Kuster is on a roll." And NH Political Report has had similar words of praise, saying she's proving herself in this campaign and giving her two "up arrows" in a row. Not a bad beginning for this up-and-comer running for a critical open seat.
Julie Hamos, IL-10
EMILY's List candidate Julie Hamos has had "a strong early showing as she prepares for a tough primary against Democrat Dan Seals," according to Politico. They went on to say Hamos will "need every bit of it to compete in a suburban Chicago seat where advertising is expensive."
Tarryl Clark, MN-06
The Minnesota Independent had plenty of good things to say about House candidate Tarryl Clark. "Tarryl Clark has been rolling up endorsements from labor unions all week. The Minnesota AFL-CIO, the Service Employees International Union’s state council and the Minnesota Building and Construction Trades Council all announced that they’ll be backing the state senator in her campaign to unseat U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann."
We'll keep you updated as these races develop.
