Does this guy think President Obama was born in the United States or not?
GOP state Rep. Cory Gardner, who hopes to take on Congresswoman Betsy Markey in Colorado's fourth congressional district in 2010, seems to have no idea what he should say when it comes to the crazy claims by so-called "birthers" who have various conspiracy theories about President Obama’s birth. See for yourself below how Gardner attempts to dance around the facts at a recent town hall meeting in Fort Collins when a meeting-goer asked him if he knew if President Obama was born in the United States or not.
Gardner: Based on what they've shown, what they've tried to say, I think the administration is trying to say he was born in this country. I know what everybody else knows.
Audience member: Is trying to say that he was born in this country?
Gardner:I know what everybody else knows.
Audience member: You know what the State Department says?
Gardner: What's that?
Audience member: That he indeed was born in Hawaii, which is a state in the United States.
Gardner: That's right, that's right.
After fumbling that question, the audience member questioned Gardner further, where he continued to blather on.
Gardner: Let's talk about that. We talked about side issues, not about our solutions. And I firmly believe that we as Republicans, we as Democrats, we as unaffiliateds, Libertarians, Greens, everyone has to talk about solutions. And we can disagree with other people's opinions and that's not being disrespectful.
Audience member: Excuse me, I don't think that misinformation and untruth is an opinion. It's a lie.
Gardner:: And again, we can't disrespect people for having a different opinion. If they're saying a flat-out statement that's a lie, then unfortunately that’s what they're doing and we should refute that with positive education. So again, appreciate your comments and I know as much as you do on that issue.
Confused? Apparently Cory Gardner is.
